Proliferation of ballistic missiles poses an increasing threat to Allied populations, territory and deployed forces. Many countries have, or are trying to develop or acquire ballistic missiles. The proliferation of these capabilities does not necessarily mean there is an immediate intent to attack NATO, but it does mean that the Alliance has a responsibility to take this into account as part of its core task of collective defence.

Gunner's Mate 1st Class Christopher Lamotte assigned to the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Russell (DDG 59) dismounts a .50-cal to demonstrate how to properly perform maintenance to Iraqi Navy sailors assigned to Iraqi Swift Boat (P-308) during a monthly Iraqi bilateral exercise.
The US Navy, Army and Coast Guard together with Iraqi and Kuwaiti navies and Kuwait Coast Guard, solidified the creation of the first in a series of US-Iraq-Kuwait trilateral exercises following an initial planning conference held at Naval Support Activity Bahrain. This was announced from Manama, Bahrain, on 13 July.
This US-Iraq-Kuwait trilateral will be a quarterly exercise that serves to develop the proficiency of all participating forces to work together in support of regional safety and security.

A Royal Navy warship shadowed a Russian Naval Task Group transiting the English Channel and steaming up the East Coast of the UK in late March. HMS Somerset, a Type 23 frigate, along with her Merlin helicopter was used to detect and monitor the movement of the Russian warship, Vice Admiral Kulakov and her supporting ships.

Astute Class submarine HMS ARTFUL was commissioned at a ceremony at HM Naval Base Clyde, on Scotland's west coast on 18 March 2016. Guest of honour at the ceremony was the submarine's sponsor Lady Zambellas, wife of the First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Sir George Zambellas. Lady Zambellas named Artful in September 2013, before her launch in May the following year in Barrow in Furness

Britain's last Coniston, or 'Ton' class minesweeper, the former HMS Bronington has sunk at her mooring at Vittoria Dock in Birkenhead, England. The 63-year old wooden ship has been deteriorating slowly over the years and as far back at 2010 there were warnings that she might sink one day unless urgent further care was taken. That day arrived about a week ago when she settled on the shallow bottom of the dock with her decks awash and water accessing her inner areas.

An agreement that will lead to joint patrols and the strengthening of maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea was signed by Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea last week. The region needs more nations to collaborate closely with each other in stamping out piracy and lawlessness that is becoming rampant at times. Nigeria has taken the lead recently in committing its navy and security services to take the initiative by responding to calls for assistance when merchant ships are attacked, even on occasions when the attack has taken place in another country's territorial waters.

It was reported from the Aegean Sea on 8 March that the German flagship of Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2) FGS BONN is the first NATO warship to enter the area of activity for a first patrol around the Greek island of Lesbos. Over the weekend 5 / 6 March NATO had expanded the area of activity into the territorial waters of Turkey and Greece, in close coordination with both Allies. NATO also expanded its cooperation with the EU's border agency FRONTEX.

The President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee (a former Defence Minister) will review an international fleet, comprising over 75 surface warships and submarines off Visakhapatnam on 6 February. Here the Review Anchorage will hold warships from the Indian Navy as well as invited navies from across the globe.
