Port & Terminal Description

Onne is situated in Rivers State in Nigeria, along the Bonny River. The WACT terminal is located in the Onne Oil and Gas Free Zone and is set up to cater for the greater Port Harcourt area and eastern Nigeria including the local lucrative oil industry. The nearest large city is Port Harcourt which has a population of 2 million inhabitants and is located 30 kilometres from Onne.

This has given Onne the advantage of handling both commercial and oil related cargoes. Her proximity to the eastern market is a big advantage for customers. The good road network makes access into the terminal easier compared to other ports and reduces risk of goods in transit from the port to the customers warehouse/market. The terminal is fully equipped with a fleet of modern container handling equipment and the cost of doing business in WACT is highly competitive and customer friendly.

Customers have consistently patronised WACT despite high freight charges based on the great quality customer service delivery obtainable in WACT. This can be measured by the quick turnaround time, 10% vessel production year on year, competitive tariff, e-ommerce (invoice, payment and other services can be booked online via TermView), low dwell time etc.

Types of containers handled by WACT on import and export includes: 20ft & 40ft Flat racks, Open top, dry and wet, tanks, out of gauge (OOG) high and normal containers etc.

WACT has 250+ reefer plugs for wet containers (reefers). WACT also handle containers less than 20ft and above 40ft.

WACT-Onne is expanding the container terminal to cater for increases in container traffic. The yard will increase by 38% giving WACT a capacity increase to 400,000 TEUs per annum and equipment capacity will shoot up by 58% via new acquisitions. This expansion will also create capacity for RORO vessels but similarly general cargo (breakbulk and bulk) is equally catered for.

Size of terminal is presently 25 hectares and will increase to 33 hectares at the completion of expansion.

WAFMAERSK vessels call every week. Pacific International Line (PIL) now makes direct calls from Asia ports to WACT in collaboration with China Shipping which has a slot agreement with PIL, therefore enabling China Shipping to include Onne among its ports of call.

The terminal consists of a quayside of 610 metres in length making it possible for up to two ships to berth and work cargo at once. The size of the terminal is 25 hectares which will be increased to 33ha at the completion of the expansion programme. Cargo is worked by ship’s own gear.

There is no berth or terminal congestion experienced at Onne.

All cargo and port related dues are paid direct to WACT
